A Lamington day trip from Brisbane is doable if you respect winding roads, two separate plateau sections, and Grade 4 time. The failure is not “missing a waterfall.” It is stacking Green Mountains, Binna Burra, Toolona, Tree Top Walk and a vineyard into one late start — then meeting Canungra hairpins in the dark with a tired driver.
This guide is unofficial. We have not walked every track ourselves. For track status, closures and rules, use Queensland Parks. Day entry is free for Queensland national parks including Lamington at time of writing (check the official page). That free entry is not a permit to start Toolona at 2pm.
The clock from Brisbane
Plan roughly two hours each way to Green Mountains or Binna Burra in light traffic. That is a typical range, not a timed run from this desk. Friday afternoons, wet bitumen and weekend coaches add time. A “half day on the plateau” is a full day once you count the drive both ways.
People who should not attempt this as a day trip: anyone leaving the CBD after 10:30am on a peak Saturday and still hoping for Toolona plus the Tree Top Walk plus dinner back in New Farm.
One section, spoken out loud

Lamington is two visitor ends. Green Mountains via Canungra (36 km winding bitumen, no RVs over 6 m / towing). Binna Burra via Beechmont (last 1.8 km very narrow). Ordinary vehicles cannot drive through the park from one to the other.
If your group cannot agree which end, you will lose the morning to a car argument in Beenleigh. Decide the night before. If you arrive at the wrong end, execute that end’s short walks — see the Plan B article.
What to walk
First visit: Centenary Track, Python Rock, Moran’s Falls. Fit and early: Toolona clockwise, or Box Forest as a shorter Grade 4 creek loop. Border Track one-way only with two cars or a booked transfer.
Kit sentence: if you still need grip shoes or a shell, use the gear hub — not a shopping wall in this article.
Turnaround
Leave the plateau with daylight for the descent. Fog, rain and fatigue are normal. A completed Centenary Track in cloud still counts as a Lamington day.
FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is a Lamington day trip from Brisbane realistic?
Yes, with an early leave, one section, and one walk you can finish. It fails when groups try both sections, a long Grade 4 circuit and a private attraction after a 9:30am CBD start.
Green Mountains or Binna Burra for a first visit?
Green Mountains if you want Moran’s, Python, Centenary, Toolona or the Tree Top Walk (private). Binna Burra if you want Tullawallal beech and Caves Track. Do not “do both” on a first day trip.
Is there an entry fee?
Queensland national parks including Lamington have no vehicle day-entry fee at time of writing — check the official park page. Camping is a separate paid permit system. Private lodges and Tree Top Walk have their own tickets.
Can I go by public transport?
There is no practical public transport to trailheads. Plan a car or a tour that includes the drive.
