Plan B: you drove to Green Mountains when Binna Burra was the plan (or the car park is full)

Named failure: the car is at O’Reilly’s / Green Mountains and the walk you wanted was at Binna Burra — or the trailhead is full. How to keep the day without a foolish transfer or illegal parking.

The named failure is simple: you meant Binna Burra (Tullawallal, Caves Track, eastern lookouts) and you are in the Green Mountains car park. Or you meant Moran’s Falls and every legal space is taken. Circling for forty minutes, then driving 90 minutes around to the other section to “still do the original walk,” is how people get angry on hairpins.

This unofficial note is about keeping a rainforest day. Follow on-site signs. Queensland Parks alerts win. Not walked.

Failure: wrong section, full of hope

Navigation apps sometimes send people to “Lamington National Park” as if it were one pin. It is not. If you wanted Tullawallal and you are at O’Reilly’s, you now have a Green Mountains day: Centenary, Python Rock, Moran’s Falls, or a café and a view. That is still a good day.

The reverse is also true: you are at Binna Burra and someone wanted Toolona. Do not start a 6-hour Green Mountains circuit after a 90-minute correction drive.

Failure: car park full, circling

Fine weekends fill Green Mountains and Binna Burra day-use. Circling is not a strategy. If you cannot park legally within a short wait, shrink or leave. A calm Centenary Track later, or a Canungra lunch and home, beats an illegal nose-in on a blind corner.

Lodge parking is often for guests. Do not invent a right to O’Reilly’s or Binna Burra Lodge bays because the QPWS lot is full.

What never to do

Do not block emergency access. Do not leave bags visible. Do not walk into restricted-access areas because “the main track was busy.” Do not treat rideshare as a shuttle between sections.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Can I cut through the park from O’Reilly’s to Binna Burra?

Not in an ordinary vehicle. The Border Track is a 21.4 km walk, not a road. Drive around via Canungra/Beechmont only if you still have a full day — usually you do not.

The Moran’s trailhead is full. What now?

Use signed Green Mountains day-use and the Centenary Track if legal space exists. If not, leave or wait — do not park on vegetation or block the winding road.

We wanted Egg Rock as Plan B.

No. Egg Rock (Kurraragin) is restricted-access. Plan B is a signed walk in the section you are standing in.
