Day-trip checklist
Pick one section, one walk class, pack for a wet plateau, and leave with daylight. From
lamingtonguide.com.au — print this page or save as PDF from your browser.
Verify before you go. Track status, camping rules and closures change. Always check
Queensland Parks — Lamington
and
park alerts.
Not walked. Not live status. Independent unofficial guide — not Queensland Parks.
1. Before you leave home
Status & weather
- Park alerts checked this morning
- Journey page for the walk you named
- Hinterland / plateau weather, not only Gold Coast strip
- One section said out loud: Green Mountains or Binna Burra
- Plan B if creeks are up or the car park is full
- Someone knows your plan + return window
- Alerts and maps screenshot on home Wi-Fi
Packing (day pack)
- Water 2 L+ on Grade 4 days
- Lunch / snacks
- Rain shell (plateau is often wetter)
- Grip shoes (not fashion sneakers)
- Spare socks · sun hat + SPF
- Tick awareness · optional leech socks after rain
- Simple first aid / blister kit
- Headlamp for winter or slow Grade 4 finishes
- Phone + Emergency+ app
2. Short waterfall day — Green Mountains (≈3–5 hrs on the plateau)
- Night before — Green Mountains via Canungra only. Not Binna Burra. Not Toolona.
- 0:00 — Arrive. Toilets. Valuables not visible in the car. Read trailhead signs.
- 0:15–1:00 — Centenary Track (Grade 1) from day-use if you want an easy start.
- 1:00–3:30 — Python Rock and/or Moran’s Falls from the signed trailhead on the access road. If that lot is full, stay on Centenary from day-use. Do not invent verge parking.
- Optional swap — O’Reilly’s Tree Top Walk is private, not a QPWS walk. Use it instead of a walk, not stacked on both lookouts after a late start.
- Leave — Daylight on the winding Canungra descent. Last town fuel/food: Canungra.
3. Full-day rule (protect the day)
- One plateau section + one walk class. No ordinary-vehicle through-road.
- Do not stack Toolona + Border Track + Tree Top Walk + a vineyard.
- Toolona Creek Circuit: 17.4 km, about 6 hours, Grade 4, clockwise — alerts first. Fit, early start only.
- Border Track one-way: 21.4 km, about 7 hours, Grade 4 — only if two cars or a booked transfer already exist.
- If the hard walk is closed or creeks are up: short waterfall day is still a good day.
- RVs over 6 m / towing: Green Mountains road is the wrong tool. Check official visiting-safely notes.
4. Order-of-stops cheat sheet
First-timer priority
- Pick Green Mountains or Binna Burra — say it before you leave Brisbane or the Coast
- Green Mountains: Centenary + Python and/or Moran’s
- Binna Burra: Tullawallal Antarctic beech and/or Caves Track (last 1.8 km very narrow)
Skip if short on time / bad weather
- Toolona Creek Circuit
- Box Forest Circuit
- Border Track without a solved shuffle
- Driving to the other section “to squeeze it in”
- Tree Top Walk plus a Grade 4 after a 10 am leave
5. Parking, fees & crowds
- Weekend: arrive early or accept the short walks you can still do legally
- Full car park: walk the section you are in, or leave. No illegal verge parking
- Lodge parking is not automatically QPWS day-use
- Day entry: no QLD national park vehicle fee including Lamington at time of writing — check parks.qld.gov.au
- No walk permit for standard day walks
- Remote bush camping is a different system (permit + tag; closed 1 Dec–31 Jan) — not this checklist
6. Safety non-negotiables
- Slippery rock, cliffs, flooded creeks — no swimming, no jumping from falls.
- Ticks, leeches, stinging trees, snakes — look where you put hands.
- Restricted areas are not attractions (Egg Rock / Kurraragin, Coomera Gorge, and others named on official pages).
- Coverage is patchy. 000 needs reception. Emergency+ app. A PLB/sat messenger is a remote-day planning note, not theatre.
- Severe-weather / cyclone recovery notices can run for months — read today’s alert, do not guess a track is open because a blog said so.
- Emergency: call 000. This checklist cannot help with rescue.
