Queensland Parks — Lamington
and
park alerts.
Independent unofficial guide — not affiliated with Queensland Parks or private lodges.
Keep the money systems split. Day entry: no QLD national park vehicle fee including Lamington at
time of writing — check the official park page. Standard day walks: no walk permit. Remote bush camping: official
booking + tag (from 1 July 2026 $7.75 per person or $31 family — check the booking page); remote bush camps
closed 1 December–31 January. O’Reilly’s and Binna Burra camps are private. This planner never sells park camping.
1. Before you leave base
☐ Queensland Parks alerts + the journey page for the walk you named — this morning
☐ One section chosen out loud: Green Mountains or Binna Burra
☐ Vehicle honesty: Green Mountains road unsuitable for RVs over 6 m / towing (official visiting-safely)
☐ Binna Burra: last 1.8 km very narrow — not a back door to Toolona
☐ Fuel / food last towns: Canungra (Green Mountains) or Nerang / Beechmont (Binna Burra)
☐ Hinterland weather, not only the Gold Coast strip
☐ Screenshot alerts, bookings and maps on home Wi-Fi (coverage is not reliable on the plateau)
☐ Tell someone your plan and expected return
☐ Hard turn-around time written down for Grade 4 days
2. Two sections — pick one primary path
Green Mountains (via Canungra)
☐ ~36 km winding bitumen after Canungra
☐ Moran’s Falls, Python Rock, Centenary Track
☐ Toolona / Box Forest if fit and alerts allow
☐ Border Track west trailhead
☐ Tree Top Walk is private (O’Reilly’s), not QPWS
Binna Burra (via Beechmont)
☐ Last 1.8 km very narrow
☐ Tullawallal Antarctic beech, Caves Track
☐ Border Track east trailhead
☐ Private lodge / camp next door — not QPWS camping
☐ Not a shortcut to Toolona the same afternoon
There is no ordinary-vehicle through-road between Green Mountains and Binna Burra. “Do both” is
not a first day trip. Full car park: walk the section you are in, or leave. No illegal verge parking.
3. Walk / day decision tree
First visit / mixed ability / late startShort waterfall day: Centenary + Python and/or Moran’s. Green Mountains only.
Fit, early, creeks reasonable, alerts openToolona Creek Circuit clockwise — 17.4 km, about 6 hours, Grade 4. One walk. Not stacked.
Two cars or a booked transfer already existBorder Track one-way — 21.4 km, about 7 hours, Grade 4. Logistics first. Not Toolona the same day.
Binna Burra first visitTullawallal and/or Caves Track. Do not treat Binna as a secret door to Green Mountains waterfalls.
Overnight / multi-dayGold Coast Hinterland Great Walk uses the Border Track as a spine. Remote bush camping needs an official permit. All remote bush camps close 1 December–31 January.
Creek up / alert lists a closure / car park fullShrink to signed short walks in the section you reached, or leave. Plan B is not “drive the other road at 2 pm”.
4. Fees — three systems, do not mix them
☐ Day use: no QLD national park vehicle fee including Lamington at time of writing — re-check parks.qld.gov.au
☐ Day walks: no walk permit for standard signed walks
☐ Remote bush camping: book.parks.qld.gov.au · tag on site · closed 1 Dec–31 Jan · rates cited as 1 July 2026 figures ($7.75 pp / $31 family) — check live
☐ O’Reilly’s / Binna Burra accommodation and camps: private, not QPWS
☐ Tree Top Walk: private paid attraction
☐ This site may earn on stays, tours and gear. Park camping fees never are affiliates.
5. Classic day skeleton — short waterfall day
Timing (typical)
Leave Brisbane / Gold Coast with a real buffer for winding roads
Arrive Green Mountains; toilets; hide valuables
Centenary and/or Python + Moran’s
Food at the plateau or back in Canungra
Descend in daylight
Success metrics
Whole group finishes on the signed walks you named
Did not invent a Grade 4 add-on
Did not “pop over” to Binna Burra
Left with daylight for the Canungra descent
6. Packing — day visitor baseline
☐ Rain / wind shell
☐ Grip shoes (wet rock, not fashion sneakers)
☐ Sun hat, SPF — canopy still burns on lookouts
☐ Day pack
☐ Water 2 L+ per adult on Grade 4 days
☐ Lunch + emergency snacks
☐ Spare socks
☐ Tick / leech awareness after rain
☐ Simple first aid + blister care
☐ Headlamp (short winter days / slow finishes)
☐ Offline alert screenshots + power bank
☐ Emergency+ app; 000 needs reception
7. Packing — overnight Great Walk (extra)
☐ Official remote-camp booking + printed/screenshot confirmation
☐ Shelter + sleep system for wet plateau nights
☐ Stove (check current fire rules — do not assume a fire)
☐ Water treatment + capacity
☐ Navigation offline + official journey notes
☐ PLB / sat messenger as a planning note, not a costume
☐ Food for full days + reserve
☐ Confirm Dec–Jan remote camps are closed — do not invent a loophole
8. Rainforest safety realism
☐ Flooded creeks and slippery rock after rain — turn around; no jumping from falls
☐ Cliffs and lookouts: stay on formed track and behind barriers
☐ Stinging trees, snakes, ticks, leeches — look before you grab
☐ Restricted areas (Egg Rock / Kurraragin and others on official pages) are not attractions
☐ Cyclone / severe-weather recovery alerts can last months — read the live notice
