The Border Track is Lamington’s classic one-way. Official Queensland Parks figures: 21.4 km, about 7 hours, Grade 4, Green Mountains trailhead to Binna Burra trailhead (or reverse). Add ~600 m if you take Mount Merino.

If you cannot solve the finish-end vehicle or pickup before you leave home, you do not have this itinerary. You have a return walk you did not pack for.

Written from official notes. Check park alerts. The Cyclone Alfred severe-weather notice applies to 31 December 2026; its 14 May 2026 update listed the Border Track as open.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Shuffle or no walk

Two cars, a lodge/tour transfer, or cancel. Screenshot the official Border Track page and park alerts. Pack 2 L+ water, lunch, shell, headlamp, first-aid, spare socks, offline map. Leave a trip plan. Coverage is not reliable.

  2. Dawn

    Place the finish car first

Typical pattern: drop a car at Binna Burra (Beechmont road, last 1.8 km narrow), then drive around via Canungra to Green Mountains — or the reverse. There is no shortcut through the park for ordinary vehicles. This shuffle is the morning.

  3. Walk

    Signed Border Track only

Start at the signed trailhead. Eat on the move. Skip optional lookout side trips if the clock is slipping. Stay back from unfenced lookouts. Restricted-access areas are not detours.

  4. Finish

    Pickup and downhill

Toilets, dry layer, drive. Do not add Caves Track or Toolona. If you finish late, the winding descent is the remaining risk — sober, slow, lights on.

Parking & access tips

  • Two trailheads, two roads — confirm which car is where before you walk.
  • Do not block lodge or emergency access at either end.
  • Taxis/rideshare from the plateau are a poor Plan B.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Toolona the same day
  • Tree Top Walk as a “warm-up”
  • A vineyard stop that eats the shuffle
  • Starting after 9am from Brisbane

Extra tips

Failure modes

  • One car and optimism about Binna Burra pickups
  • Stacking this with a creek circuit because both are Grade 4 famous
