Overnight on the Hinterland Great Walk (planning notes)

Multi-day (54 km Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk) — not a day tripBest for: Experienced walkers with official remote-camp permits and a dry window outside 1 Dec–31 Jan

Overnight notes for the Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk via Lamington’s Border Track: official permits, Dec–Jan remote-camp closure, private lodges booked separately, patchy phone coverage, and a post-storm check of alerts. Not a first Lamington visit.

The 54 km Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk is a multi-day walk, not a day trip. Lamington’s Border Track is a main link between Green Mountains and Binna Burra. Distances, camp names and open/closed status must be confirmed on official Queensland Parks pages for your dates.

All remote bush camps close 1 December–31 January. Permit + fee via book.parks.qld.gov.au/camping. Display the tag. This site never affiliates park camping.

This is not a live closure list. Residual Tropical Cyclone Alfred recovery into late 2026 means you check park alerts before you put a long walk on the calendar.

Track status, weather and closures change — verify on Queensland Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Weeks before

    Permits, not vibes

Book remote camps on the official Queensland Parks camping service only. Confirm the live camp list, water notes and fire rules. If your dates hit 1 Dec–31 Jan, remote bush camps are closed — pick another month or a private lodge/campground (O’Reilly’s / Binna Burra are private channels).

  2. Week before

    Alerts and logistics

Read park alerts and the Great Walk / Border Track journey pages. Arrange drop-off and pickup — two roads, no through-vehicle. Tell someone not on the walk your plan. Pack for no coverage.

  3. On track

Stay on the signed Great Walk / Border Track

Camp only at booked sites. Restricted-access areas are not scenic camps. Flooded creeks: wait or turn around. No pets, no fires where banned, no inventing shortcuts toward Coomera Gorge or Egg Rock.

  4. Exit

    Town services are downhill

Canungra for Green Mountains; Nerang/Beechmont for Binna Burra. Hospitals are Gold Coast / Brisbane. Do not treat a lodge as emergency services.
