Short waterfall day — Moran’s, Python & Centenary

3–5 hours on the Green Mountains plateau (+ 2 hr class each way from Brisbane)Best for: First visit, mixed ability, late-ish start, or Plan B when Toolona is too much weather

Green Mountains only: Centenary Track, Python Rock lookout and Moran’s Falls — named waterfall and escarpment views without a 6-hour creek circuit. Tree Top Walk only if it replaces a walk, not stacked on top.

This is the “we have never been to Lamington, we have kids or mixed knees, we left Brisbane at a civil hour” plan. Success is one plateau section, two or three short signed walks, and everyone still speaking on the Canungra descent.

Green Mountains via Canungra. Not Binna Burra. Not Toolona. Not the Border Track. If parking at the Moran’s / Python trailhead is ugly, use Centenary from day-use and shrink.

Always check Queensland Parks alerts the morning you leave. This itinerary is planning guidance — not live track status. Written from official notes, not a diary of walks we clocked ourselves.

Track status, weather and closures change — verify on Queensland Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Pick the section out loud

Say it: Green Mountains, not Binna Burra. Screenshot alerts, the Moran’s Falls, Python Rock and Centenary journey pages, and the access-road note (no RVs >6 m / towing). Pack shells, grip shoes, water, snacks. Agree a leave-plateau time so you are not on hairpins in the dark.

  2. Leave Brisbane / Gold Coast

    Canungra then the climb

Fuel and a toilet in Canungra. Then 36 km of winding bitumen. If anyone is car-sick, this is expected — slower is safer. No public transport fallback.

  3. On the plateau

    Centenary, then one lookout walk

Centenary Track (1.8 km return, ~30 min, Grade 1) as the sealed start or the link between day-use and the Moran’s / Python trailhead. Then Python Rock (3.1 km, ~1 hr, Grade 3) and/or Moran’s Falls (4.4 km return, ~1.5 hr, Grade 4). Stay on signed tracks and lookout platforms.

  4. Optional extra

Tree Top Walk — private, optional

O’Reilly’s Tree Top Walk is privately operated. Include it only if you still have energy — not as well as both Moran’s and Python after a late arrival. Check their hours and tickets separately from Queensland Parks.

  5. Leave the plateau

    Leave with daylight

Be rolling downhill with daylight margin. Canungra for a meal if needed. Gold Coast / Brisbane hospitals are the medical layer — not the plateau. Do not start Toolona because the short walks “felt easy.”

Parking & access tips

  • Python Rock / Moran’s Falls trailhead is on the access road before the main day-use loop — read signs.
  • If the lot is full, park legally at day-use and use Centenary Track. Do not invent verge parking on a winding road.
  • Lodge parking is not automatically QPWS day-use.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Toolona Creek Circuit
  • Box Forest Circuit
  • Border Track
  • A transfer to Binna Burra
  • Tree Top Walk plus both Grade 4/3 walks after a 10am leave

Extra tips

Who this is for

  • First Lamington day from Brisbane or the Gold Coast
  • Mixed walking ability
  • Plan B when creek circuits are closed or wet

Who should not

  • Anyone who already promised Toolona on social media this afternoon
  • RVs over 6 m / towing on the Green Mountains road

Related trail guides

  • Centenary TrackCentenary Track is a 1.8 km return Grade 1 sealed path (about 30 minutes) between the Python Rock / Moran’s Falls trailhead and Green Mountains day-use. Opened for the park’s centenary. Accessible with assistance — confirm the official accessibility notes on the day.
  • Python Rock TrackPython Rock Track is a 3.1 km return Grade 3 walk (about 1 hour) to a constructed lookout over Moran’s Falls, Castle Crag and Mount Razorback. Same trailhead family as Moran’s Falls — different product.
  • Moran’s Falls TrackMoran’s Falls Track is a 4.4 km return Grade 4 walk (about 1.5 hours) from the Python Rock and Moran’s Falls trailhead. Down through forest to a lookout over the falls — short by Lamington standards, still wet-rock serious.
