Park overview

Lamington National Park is a Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage plateau on the Scenic Rim — two main visitor sections with no ordinary-vehicle through-road. Most day visitors sample Green Mountains or Binna Burra, not the whole reserve. This hub is how you pick a section that matches time, weather and energy.

Always verify live conditions on the official Queensland Parks park page and alerts. This site is independent and unofficial.

How to choose an area

First visit, limited time: Green Mountains short walks (Centenary, Python Rock, Moran’s Falls). Do not add Toolona on impulse.

Waterfall circuit day: Toolona Creek (clockwise) or Box Forest for Elabana — one Grade 4 only, official status open.

Eastern section: Binna Burra via Beechmont for lookouts, Tullawallal and Caves track — a different road, not a Plan B for a full Green Mountains car park at 2pm.

One-way / overnight: Border Track with a transfer, or the Hinterland Great Walk with remote-camp permits (closed December–January).

Recommended order on any day: pick the section, check alerts, decide short walks vs one Grade 4, then leave time to drive down the winding road in daylight.

Geography in plain English

Think of Lamington as two plateau sections on the McPherson Range: Green Mountains (O’Reilly’s, via Canungra) and Binna Burra (via Beechmont). The Border Track is the walking spine between them. Neighbouring lodges are private. There is no public transport.

Drivers should budget the slow winding access road as part of the day, not an afterthought. Taxis and rideshare from the park are difficult.

Tree ferns and rainforest walking track, Albert River Circuit, Green Mountains, Lamington National Park

Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk

Best for: Experienced overnight walkers with official camping permits and a weather-honest plan

The 54 km multi-day Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk uses Lamington’s Border Track as a major spine between Green Mountains and Binna Burra, then continues toward Springbrook country. Remote bush camping needs an official permit; all remote bush camps close 1 December–31 January.

Not a drive. It is a multi-day walk. Day visitors sample the Border Track section only with a car-shuffle.

Park areas FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Green Mountains or Binna Burra for a first day?

Pick one before you leave town. There is no ordinary-vehicle through-road. Green Mountains (via Canungra) is the usual waterfall-circuit day. Binna Burra (via Beechmont) is lookouts, Tullawallal and Caves Track — not a 2pm Plan B for a full Green Mountains car park.

Can I visit both sections in one day from Brisbane?

Not as a first-visit plan. Each access road is winding; adding the second section usually means a dark descent. Do one plateau end well, then come back.

Where does the Hinterland Great Walk fit?

It uses Lamington’s Border Track as a spine between Green Mountains and Binna Burra, then continues toward Springbrook country. Remote bush camping needs an official permit and closes 1 December–31 January. Not a day-trip product.
