Green Mountains (O’Reilly’s)
Guide updated · verify Queensland Parks the morning you go
Western plateau section via Canungra: O’Reilly’s, Tree Top Walk (private), Moran’s Falls, Python Rock, Centenary Track, Box Forest, Toolona Creek Circuit and the Green Mountains end of the Border Track. Winding 36 km bitumen. No RVs over 6 m / towing.
- Best for: Waterfall circuits, first-visit short walks, Tree Top Walk as a private extra, Border Track west trailhead
- Time: Half day for Moran’s / Python / Centenary; full day for Toolona or Box Forest; overnight if you want two plateau mornings
- Via Canungra, then ~36 km of winding bitumen (allow 50+ min from town). No through-road to Binna Burra for ordinary vehicles.

Why Green Mountains is the default waterfall day
If someone in Brisbane says “we’re going to Lamington,” they often mean this road: Canungra, then a long winding climb to O’Reilly’s / Green Mountains day-use. This is where Toolona, Box Forest, Moran’s Falls, Python Rock and the Centenary Track live. It is also where the Border Track starts (or finishes) on the western side.
The gift is concentration: short sealed walking, a named waterfall lookout, and the park’s hardest popular creek circuits share one plateau end. The problem is the same concentration plus a road that punishes late starts, large vehicles and “we’ll just pop over to Binna Burra.”
Access road (the day starts in Canungra)
From Brisbane allow about two hours to the plateau in light traffic (~110 km class). From the Gold Coast it is still a winding hinterland mission, not a beach-to-lookout hop. Canungra is the last ordinary town for fuel and food before the 36 km climb.
Queensland Parks notes the Green Mountains road is unsuitable for RVs over 6 m or vehicles towing caravans/camper trailers. Believe that before you test it. No public transport. Taxis/rideshare are difficult from the park.
Walks that actually fit
First visit, mixed group: Centenary Track, then Python Rock and/or Moran’s Falls. That is a complete Green Mountains day.
Fit and early: Toolona Creek Circuit clockwise, or Box Forest if you want Elabana without six hours. Border Track one-way only with a shuffle to Binna Burra — see that trail page.
O’Reilly’s is next door, not the land manager
O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, its Tree Top Walk and its campground are privately operated. Iconic, useful, ticketed and booked on their channels. They are not Queensland Parks walking tracks or QPWS vehicle camping.
Use them deliberately. A two-hour Tree Top Walk queue is a legitimate morning. It is also how Toolona dies.
How Green Mountains days fail
Wrong section: the plan was Binna Burra beech and you are at O’Reilly’s. Execute Green Mountains short walks; do not add a Beechmont transfer after lunch.
Full car park / late start: shrink to Centenary + lookouts. Do not start Toolona at 1pm. Residual cyclone and flood damage: check park alerts — do not guess which creek circuits are open.

FAQ — Green Mountains
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is Green Mountains the same as Binna Burra?
No. They are the two main sections of Lamington. Separate roads (Canungra vs Beechmont). No ordinary-vehicle through-road. Pick one for a day trip unless you planned a Border Track car-shuffle.
Can I take a campervan up to O’Reilly’s?
Queensland Parks notes the Green Mountains road is unsuitable for RVs over 6 m or vehicles towing. If that is your vehicle, choose another plan or a tour. Do not learn this on a hairpin.
Is the Tree Top Walk a national park track?
No. It is privately operated at O’Reilly’s. Check their channels for tickets and hours. Queensland Parks tracks start at signed QPWS trailheads.
What should a first visitor walk here?
Centenary Track plus Python Rock and/or Moran’s Falls. Toolona only if you are fit, early, and alerts say go. Always verify Queensland Parks.
