Lamington National Park walks
Guide updated · grades and open status change — verify Queensland Parks
Start with a clear short walks vs Grade 4 circuit decision. Moran’s / Python / Centenary covers most first Brisbane or Gold Coast day trips. Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on Queensland Parks and park alerts. Weather, closures and stair status change.
Decide before you lace up
- Short walks: Centenary, Python Rock, Moran’s Falls, Tullawallal — high reward without a 6-hour gorge.
- Grade 4 circuits: Box Forest or Toolona — one hero only, clockwise on Toolona, status open.
- One-way / multi-day: Border Track or Great Walk — transfer plan, permits, limited bail-outs.
Stacking two hard walks plus the postcard lookout is the classic first-visit failure mode. Pick the table row that matches energy, then open the full trail guide for getting-there detail.

Walks FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
What is the best first walk in Lamington?
Most first-timers start with Green Mountains short walks (Centenary, Python Rock, Moran’s Falls), then add Box Forest or Toolona only if energy, weather and official status allow. Grade 4 circuits are not automatic first-day upgrades. Always verify track status with Queensland Parks.
How hard are Toolona and the Border Track?
Both are Grade 4: long, undulating, slippery after rain, unreliable mobile. Toolona has creek crossings (walk clockwise). Border Track is 21.4 km one-way with limited bail-outs. Fit groups only, with early starts and official open status.
Can I do Toolona and the Border Track on the same day?
Usually a bad plan. Pick one long walk when it is listed open, or keep the day to short waterfall walks. Two Grade 4 circuits in one day is how groups finish the winding descent in the dark.
