Border Track (Green Mountains to Binna Burra)

Area: Green Mountains (O’Reilly’s)

The Border Track is Lamington’s 21.4 km Grade 4 one-way walk between Green Mountains and Binna Burra along the McPherson Range. Official Queensland Parks time is about 7 hours. It is also a section of the Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk. There is no ordinary-vehicle through-road between the two trailheads.

Do not pair: Do not pair with Toolona, Box Forest, Tree Top Walk plus a vineyard, or a late Brisbane leave. One hard spine. Full stop.

Turnaround: Turn around at the first signed lookout if anyone lacks water, a shell, a headlamp in winter, or a confirmed finish-end ride. Pride does not flatten 21 km.

  • One car at Green Mountains and a fantasy that “someone will pick us up at Binna Burra” — taxis are hard; you now have a 21 km reverse or a stranded group.
  • Stacking Toolona Creek Circuit and the Border Track because both are famous — that is two full hard days pretending to be one.
  • Grade 4 · one-way rainforest spine
  • About 7 hours walking — a full daylight product, not a late add-on
  • 21.4 km one way (~7 hr; add 600 m for the Mount Merino side trip)
  • Effort: hard
  • Best for: Fit walkers with a two-car or booked-transfer plan who want the park’s classic one-way spine

Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on Queensland Parks before you go.

Where you start

Green Mountains trailhead (typical west→east) or Binna Burra trailhead

This is a one-way ridge walk between two separate park sections. Pick a start that matches your car-shuffle, then treat the other end as a real finish with toilets, water top-up and a ride — not a picnic afterthought.

How to get there

  1. There is no through-road for ordinary vehicles between Green Mountains and Binna Burra. Plan two cars, a pre-booked lodge/tour transfer, or a very long reverse walk you did not actually want.
  2. Green Mountains: via Canungra, then about 36 km of winding bitumen (allow 50+ minutes from town). Unsuitable for RVs over 6 m or vehicles towing.
  3. Binna Burra: via Beechmont; the last 1.8 km is very narrow. Allow about 70 minutes from Broadbeach in ordinary traffic — more on weekends.
  4. No practical public transport. Taxis and rideshare are difficult from either trailhead. Fuel and a meal stop belong in Canungra, Beechmont or earlier — not at the ridge cairns.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Night before: screenshot Queensland Parks alerts, the Border Track journey page, and both access-road notes. Agree a finish time (you should be finishing with daylight, not starting a night walk).
  2. Start at the signed trailhead for the section you actually parked at. Do not assume “the lodge car park” is the same pin as the Border Track start.
  3. Walk the signed Border Track. Side trips (Mount Merino and named lookouts) are optional extras with extra distance — they are not free.
  4. Eat and drink on the move. There are no reliable taps or kiosks on the ridge once you leave the ends.
  5. Finish at the opposite section, use toilets if available, and execute the car-shuffle or pickup you already booked. Do not start hunting for a taxi on the plateau.

What to expect

The Border Track is the park’s signed ridge spine: subtropical rainforest, occasional escarpment lookouts, Antarctic beech pockets at the high points, and a lot of honest Grade 4 walking. Official Queensland Parks figures are 21.4 km one way and about 7 hours (add about 600 m if you take the Mount Merino side trip). It is not a boardwalk and not a “rainforest stroll from the café.”

It is also a section of the 54 km Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk. Doing the Border Track as a day walk is a different product from booking remote bush camps and walking the whole Great Walk. Do not mix those plans on the same calendar square.

World Heritage Gondwana Rainforests context is real — cool-temperate beech at the northern end of its range, hoop pine, vines — but the operational story is simpler: two trailheads, no through-road, long day, verify status.

Logistics that actually decide the day

Car shuffle first, walk second. Green Mountains (O’Reilly’s / Canungra road) and Binna Burra (Beechmont road) are separate approaches. Ordinary vehicles cannot drive from one trailhead to the other through the park. If you cannot solve the finish, you do not have a Border Track day — you have a return walk you did not pack for.

Start early. Seven hours of walking plus two winding plateau roads is a dawn-to-late-afternoon mission from Brisbane or the Gold Coast. A 10am selfie at O’Reilly’s is already a failed Border Track start.

Fuel, food and medical sit in towns, not on the ridge: Canungra before Green Mountains; Nerang / Beechmont before Binna Burra; Gold Coast or Brisbane hospitals for anything serious. Do not invent clinic hours or fuel prices here.

Day shape

Night before: alerts, two cars or a paid transfer, water for a full day, shell, headlamp, first-aid, tick awareness, offline map screenshot, leave-a-plan with a person not on the walk.

Morning: one trailhead only. Do not “pop into the Tree Top Walk” as a warm-up — that private O’Reilly’s product can eat an hour you needed for daylight.

Midday: eat on the track. If you are behind the clock at a named lookout, skip side trips. The walk is the product.

Finish: toilets, dry socks, execute pickup. Do not add Caves Track or Toolona “because we are already here.”

Hazards (park-true, not drama)

Slippery roots and mud after rain; unfenced lookouts; fatigue mistakes late in the day. Ticks, leeches, stinging trees and snakes are ordinary rainforest facts — not a reason to panic, a reason to look where you put hands and sit.

Do not swim or jump at creeks or falls you pass on connecting walks. No pets. No mountain bikes, slacklining or bolts. Restricted-access areas (Poondahra cliffs, Egg Rock / Kurraragin, Snake Ridge, East Mount Gipps, Ballunjui Falls, Black Canyon, Coomera Gorge) are not optional viewpoint detours.

Comms: coverage is not reliable. Do not invent a carrier map. 000 and 106 need reception. Emergency+ helps when you have a signal. For this length of remote-feeling circuit, a PLB or satellite messenger is a reasonable planning note — not a substitute for leaving a trip plan.

Reverse / direction

Queensland Parks presents the Border Track as Green Mountains trailhead to Binna Burra trailhead (or the reverse). Either direction is a one-way. Choose based on where you can leave a car and where you can be collected — not based on a blog’s favourite sunrise.

Walking it as an out-and-back (42+ km) is a different, usually worse, idea for a day visitor. Overnight remote camping needs an official permit and is closed 1 December–31 January at all remote bush camps — check current rules.

Two failure modes (and the turnaround)

Failure one: drove only to Green Mountains with one car and “we’ll figure Binna Burra out.” There is no ordinary through-road and rideshare is a poor bet. Failure two: stacked this with Toolona Creek Circuit, the Tree Top Walk and a Canungra vineyard because a Gold Coast tour brochure listed all four.

Turnaround at the first lookout if the group is already slow, wet without shells, or missing a confirmed finish. Confirm signed distance and open/closed status on the official Border Track page the morning you go — this page is not live status.

Packing list (shell, grip, water) lives on the gear hub— not as a merch wall on every walk. Pairing and Plan B: plan your visit · Wrong section / full car park Plan B.

Extra tips

  • Treat 7 hours as walking time, not house-to-house. Add two winding drives and a shuffle.
  • Coverage is not reliable. Signal is often better near lookouts than in the forest. 000/106 need reception. Emergency+ app and a PLB/sat messenger are planning notes for this class of day.
  • Official severe-weather alert (Cyclone Alfred) applies to 31 December 2026. The 14 May 2026 update listed the Border Track as open — still check park alerts the morning you go.
