Box Forest Circuit
Area: Green Mountains (O’Reilly’s)
Guide updated · verify live track status with Queensland Parks
Box Forest Circuit is a 10.9 km Grade 4 loop from Green Mountains (about 4 hours). Elabana Falls is the name most visitors remember. Still a real creek day: wet rock, roots, and official clockwise notes to verify on the journey page.
Do not pair: Not with Toolona or Border Track the same day.
Turnaround: Turn around if crossings are in flood or anyone is sliding on wet rock without grip shoes.
- Stacking Box Forest after Toolona “because Elabana is on the way.”
- Ignoring flood alerts because the car park was sunny.
- Grade 4 · Green Mountains creek circuit
- About 4 hours walking
- 10.9 km circuit
- Effort: hard
- Best for: Fit walkers who want Elabana Falls country without a 6-hour Toolona commitment
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on Queensland Parks before you go.

Where you start
Green Mountains trailhead
Signed Green Mountains trailhead. Whole circuit — not a 200 m waterfall car-park stroll.
How to get there
- Same Green Mountains access as Toolona: Canungra then 36 km of winding bitumen. No RVs over 6 m / towing.
- Park in signed day-use. No public transport.
How to do it (step by step)
- Confirm open/closed status — creek circuits take flood and storm damage. The cyclone alert to 31 Dec 2026 listed Toolona as open in its 14 May 2026 update; check park alerts again.
- Walk the signed circuit. Queensland Parks notes the whole circuit is best walked clockwise — confirm on the official page.
- Elabana Falls is a place to look, not a swimming hole. Stay on the track.
- Four hours is walking time. Add the Canungra climb and time to drive back to the coast or Brisbane in daylight.
What to expect
Official figures: 10.9 km circuit, about 4 hours, Grade 4, Green Mountains trailhead. Elabana Falls is the postcard moment inside a longer creek loop — budget the loop, not the photo.
Best walked clockwise per Queensland Parks notes for the whole circuit. Confirm the journey page on the day.
Logistics & reverse
Green Mountains only. Canungra is the last ordinary town stop. If Box Forest is closed, Moran’s Falls + Python Rock + Centenary can still make a Green Mountains day without forcing a flooded gorge.
Failure modes: treating Elabana as a swim; stacking this with Toolona; arriving at 2pm.
Packing list (shell, grip, water) lives on the gear hub— not as a merch wall on every walk. Pairing and Plan B: plan your visit · Wrong section / full car park Plan B.

Extra tips
- If Toolona is too long or closed, this is often the honest shrink — still Grade 4.
- Spare socks after creek spray. Grip shoes, not city sneakers.
