Toolona Creek Circuit
Area: Green Mountains (O’Reilly’s)
Guide updated · verify live track status with Queensland Parks
Toolona Creek Circuit is a 17.4 km Grade 4 loop from Green Mountains (about 6 hours). Queensland Parks recommends walking it clockwise. Creek lines, multiple falls, roots and wet rock — this is the reason many people climb the plateau, and the walk that wrecks a late-start Gold Coast day.
Do not pair: Not with Border Track, Albert River circuit, or a vineyard-and-sunset stack the same day.
Turnaround: Turn around at the first flooded crossing or when the clock says you cannot finish in daylight. Closed on alerts means closed — no social-media bypass.
- Left the Gold Coast at 10am, did Tree Top Walk first, started Toolona after lunch — finished in the dark or bailed wet and grumpy.
- Walked it anticlockwise against the official clockwise note, then blamed “poor signage” when tired at the wrong creek crossing.

Where you start
Green Mountains trailhead
Start at the signed Green Mountains trailhead at the end of Lamington National Park Road. This is a full-day creek circuit, not a stroll from the O’Reilly’s lawn.
How to get there
- Drive via Canungra, then the winding 36 km climb to Green Mountains. Allow 50+ minutes from Canungra; more if you are towing nothing but still hate hairpins.
- Unsuitable for RVs over 6 m or vehicles towing caravans/camper trailers. If that is your vehicle, this is not your walk today.
- No public transport. Park in signed day-use areas; do not block lodge or emergency access.
How to do it (step by step)
- Check alerts on home Wi-Fi. Post-cyclone and flood closures are real on creek circuits — check park alerts; do not guess open/closed from social media.
- Walk CLOCKWISE from Green Mountains as Queensland Parks recommends. Follow the signed Toolona Creek Circuit, not a random “waterfall GPS pin.”
- Carry 2 L+ water, lunch, a shell, spare socks and a first-aid kit. Creek spray and rain are normal even when the Gold Coast strip is sunny.
- Stay on the formed track. Do not scramble to the lip of a fall for a photo. Do not swim.
- Finish back at Green Mountains with daylight. O’Reilly’s facilities are private — buy a coffee if they are open; do not treat the lodge as a QPWS visitor centre.
What to expect
Queensland Parks lists Toolona Creek Circuit at 17.4 km, about 6 hours, Grade 4, from the Green Mountains trailhead. It is a waterfall and gorge day: creek noise, wet rock, rainforest walls, and enough time on feet that lunch is a sit-down, not a gel while walking.
It is the classic “we came to Lamington for waterfalls” walk. It is also the walk people underestimate because the Gold Coast weather app showed 26° and sunny. Gorge microclimate does not care.
Logistics
One section only: Green Mountains. Do not drive to Binna Burra for Toolona. If you already drove to the wrong section, read the Plan B article and pick a Binna Burra walk — do not add a 90-minute transfer “to still do Toolona.”
Last town fuel and food: Canungra. Last medical of any seriousness: Gold Coast or Brisbane hospitals, not the plateau. Coverage is patchy in the creek line.
Day shape
Leave Brisbane or the Gold Coast early enough to be walking by a reasonable morning hour. Clockwise from Green Mountains. One circuit. Coffee after, not as a two-hour Tree Top Walk prelude.
If rain has been heavy, check alerts before you leave the bitumen. A closed or flood-affected Toolona is not a dare.
Hazards
Slippery rocks, flooded creeks, cliffs at falls, leeches, ticks, stinging trees, snakes. Do not swim or jump. Carry a shell even on a “fine” coast morning.
Stinging trees (Dendrocnide) are a real rainforest plant — look, do not grab large heart-shaped leaves if you do not know the flora. This is not a botany exam; it is “don’t touch what you cannot name.”
Direction (clockwise)
Official note: walk CLOCKWISE from Green Mountains. Treat that as the plan unless on-site signs say otherwise on the day. Reverse “because we felt like it” is how groups meet the steep or creek bits in the wrong order when tired.
Two failure modes (and the turnaround)
Failure one: late Gold Coast start + Tree Top Walk + Toolona + vineyard. That is the day-trip-too-long article in real time. Failure two: treating Box Forest and Toolona as a combo platter because both mention Elabana / creek falls.
Turnaround at the first unsafe crossing or when daylight maths fails. Verify the official Toolona Creek Circuit page the morning you go.
Packing list (shell, grip, water) lives on the gear hub— not as a merch wall on every walk. Pairing and Plan B: plan your visit · Wrong section / full car park Plan B.

Extra tips
- Clockwise is the official recommendation from Green Mountains — do not freestyle a reverse because a forum said it was “nicer.”
- Leech season after rain is ordinary. Long pants or leech socks are a comfort choice, not a personality test.
- If Toolona is closed, Box Forest or Moran’s / Python / Centenary is the honest shrink — not a Border Track consolation.
