Most bad days are too much plan, not “bad rainforest.” Match the walk to energy, daylight, and whether you already have a way back to the other car park. You can always do less on the ground; you cannot invent daylight on the Canungra descent.

First-day plan (what to do first)

If you only remember one filter: one section and one walk class for most mixed groups. The high-satisfaction first product is Green Mountains short walks — Centenary, Python Rock and/or Moran’s Falls — not Toolona stacked with the Tree Top Walk after a 10am Gold Coast leave.

1. Night before: say Green Mountains or Binna Burra out loud. Screenshot park alerts and the journey page for the walk you named. Fuel and food at Canungra or Nerang/Beechmont — not at the trailhead.
2. Arrive with buffer: winding last kilometres eat the clock. Fine weekends fill both car parks.
3. Green Mountains default: toilets, hide valuables, then Centenary and/or Python + Moran’s. If the Moran’s lot is full, stay on signed walks from day-use. Do not invent verge parking.
4. Tree Top Walk: private O’Reilly’s. Use it instead of a walk on a short day — not stacked on a Grade 4 circuit.
5. Do not invent: Toolona + Border Track + Binna Burra + a vineyard. Leave the plateau with daylight for the descent.

How long do I need?

Drive time from Brisbane is typically about two hours each way (~110 km) in light traffic, plus a winding finish. Gold Coast to Binna Burra is often planned around 70 minutes from Broadbeach — still not a lunch outing. Who should not attempt a stacked day: anyone leaving the coast after 10am and still hoping for Toolona, Tree Top Walk and a vineyard.

When to go

There is no single best month — only trade-offs between leeches, storm risk, crowds and daylight. The plateau is often cooler and wetter than the Gold Coast strip on the same day. No snow. No crocodiles. No 4WD requirement on graded walking tracks.

• Summer: long daylight, storms, leeches, Dec–Jan remote-camp closure. Creek circuits after heavy rain — check park alerts.
• Autumn / spring: often the sweet spot for mixed groups — still pack a shell.
• Winter: shorter days on Toolona and the Border Track; headlamp in the pack; cooler nights if camping.
• Weekends: parking stress at both ends. Arrive early or name Plan B (short walks / other section another day).

Year-round is the honest answer for short Green Mountains walks if you pack a shell. Winter is still fine for mixed groups — just protect daylight on Toolona and the Border Track. Summer is not “closed”; it is storms, leeches, and the official Dec–Jan remote-camp shutdown. Confirm live on Queensland Parks, not this list.

  Severe weather damage (Cyclone Alfred)

  Still listed on park-alerts (Gold Coast). Illinbah circuit eastern side closed (western side open; return the same way from Illinbah camp). Coomera circuit: northern Border Track junction to Coomera Falls lookout only, then return the same way. Albert River circuit: southern Border Track junction to Echo Point only, then return the same way. Border Track, Toolona, Box Forest, Moran’s, Python Rock, Centenary, Tullawallal, Caves and the Hinterland Great Walk track listed open in that 14 May 2026 update. Permits for closed areas suspended.

• 5 May – 30 September 2026

  Unplanned works — Woonoongoora Walkers’ Camp

  Walkers’ camp closed to new bookings (Lamington, Springbrook, Hinterland Great Walk). Walkers can bypass the camp. Watch 30 September 2026.

Park offices: Green Mountains weekdays 8.00am–3.30pm; Binna Burra weekdays 7.30am–4.00pm (park duties permitting). Weekend information-centre hours depend on volunteers. The park itself is open 24 hours. Source: visiting safely.

Fees, access & park rules (keep the systems split)

Do not treat this page as a live fee table. Confirm on the official park page and booking service.

• Day / vehicle entry: no vehicle entry fee for Queensland national parks including Lamington at time of writing (check the official page). Day use is free. Parking at signed trailheads/day-use.
• Standard day walks: no individual walk permit on graded tracks. Commercial activities, events and commercial drones need permits. Recreational drones must not cause nuisance (CASA rules).
• Remote bush camping: permit + fee via official booking; display tag. All remote bush camps close 1 December–31 January. Queensland Parks camping fees from 1 July 2026: $7.75 per person per night, or $31.00 per family per night (Queensland Parks defines a family as one or two adults and accompanying children under 18, up to eight people. Educational rate $4.25 per person per night on approved excursions. Confirm live on the official camping page — fees are not locked here.) — still check the official camping bookings page because figures change.
• Private camps: O’Reilly’s Campground (Green Mountains) and Binna Burra campground are privately managed — their channels, not the QPWS vehicle-camp system.
• Restricted-access (never attractions): Poondahra cliffs, Egg Rock (Kurraragin), Snake Ridge, East Mount Gipps, Ballunjui Falls area, Black Canyon area, Coomera Gorge area.
• No pets. No mountain bikes, slacklining or bolts on walking tracks.
• Tree Top Walk is privately operated at O’Reilly’s — separate tickets, not QPWS.

Lamington National Park camping

Never mix free day-use messaging with camping fees. Official remote camping is booked only through Queensland Parks. This site never sells or affiliates those bookings.

Where to stay (decision filter)

A plateau night (private O’Reilly’s or Binna Burra lodge/camp) buys a second morning without repeating the winding road. If that product is full or too dear, Canungra is the last-services Green Mountains gateway; Beechmont / Nerang sit on the Binna Burra approach; Gold Coast and Brisbane work only if you leave early and pick one section.

• Official remote bush camping: Queensland Parks only — never affiliated here. Closed 1 Dec–31 Jan.
• Private O’Reilly’s and Binna Burra camps/lodges: their channels, not QPWS vehicle camping.
• Commercial gateway beds: see Stay hub (Booking.com searches may earn a commission).
• One night + full Brisbane or Gold Coast return is common; two nights is kinder for Toolona plus a short-walk morning.

Getting there

Car is the practical access. No public transport. Taxis/rideshare from the park are difficult. Commercial tours exist when you do not want the winding drive.

• Tours: legitimate when you want transport handled — they do not replace alerts. Tours hub.
• Wrong-section Plan B: you drove to Green Mountains when Binna Burra was the plan.
• First-stop default for first-timers: Green Mountains / Moran’s Falls or Centenary Track, then Python Rock if energy remains. Binna Burra is a different day’s drive, not a same-afternoon add-on. All areas: park overview.

Fuel, food, medical — last town, not the trailhead

Orientation only — not a live directory, no invented prices. Emergencies: 000. Coverage is not reliable on the plateau; 000/106 need reception. Emergency+ app. PLB/sat messenger is a planning note for remote circuits.

Lamington National Park parking

Fine weekends fill Green Mountains and Binna Burra day-use. A full car park is a Plan B moment, not a reason to invent illegal parking on a winding road.

• Arrive earlier than you think on peak days.
• Name Plan B: wrong section / full car park.
• Never leave bags visible. Never block emergency access.
• Grade 4 circuits need even earlier starts — and official open status.
• Download alerts and maps on home Wi-Fi. Coverage is patchy.

Lamington National Park weather & safety

Lamington National Park weather is often cooler, wetter and foggier than the Gold Coast on the same day. Check a hinterland forecast, not only Surfers Paradise. Residual Cyclone Alfred recovery: check park alerts; do not guess which tracks are open.

• Pack a waterproof shell even on a “fine” coast morning.
• Hazards: slippery rocks, cliffs, flooded creeks, ticks, leeches, stinging trees, snakes, eels. Do not swim or jump.
• No pets. No MTB / slacklining / bolts on walking tracks.
• Tell someone your plan on longer walks; emergencies: 000. This website cannot assist with rescue.

Packing baseline

A shell and grip shoes are the lookout-day minimum. Creek circuits add water, spare socks and a leech plan.
